Addie Unwrapped

Some photo’s from the Virginia Jacks’ and Aarhus’s  Christmas. Addie turns out to be a very careful gift unwrapper.  Each gift we handed her, she would rip-off a small piece of paper and try to hand it to us (a new thing she does now).  She and Miles had a more fun with the paper and tissue than the gifts of course.  She also got a new dolly from G and G Aarhus that she posed with.  I also included the photo of myself (completely shocked) after I opened my new gift Erika gave me that I called most of you on today.

Merry Chistmas !

Today we will be opening all the presents Addie got…more footage to come of that. She has three Christmas outfits to model today. Our Christmas tree exceeded its gift-capacity a few weeks ago.  Thank you everyone for the generous gifts.  Addie will have fun opening them today!

Merry Christmas Card

Most of you readers received our Christmas card.  To organize two babies, remember to smile, and look to the camera proved to be a challenge; to be exact a 1 in 20 chance.  We preset our camera (pointing toward the old horse-drawn sleigh outside Erika’s work) to take 20 shots and unbelievably in 19 of them we were: looking in different directions, not smiling, or rearranging the little ones.  But the very last one the camera shot  (just before we ran for cover from the incoming freezing rain) turned out.

To my surprise

I turned the corner to see why Addie was playing so quietly by herself in her room and I found her standing next to her toy bin, reaching in for toys inside.  Apparently she has mastered the standing position.

Make it Right: Lower Ninth Ward, New Orleans

This is a quick plug about a project the office has been involved in for the last year. It just went public this week and has been widely televised.  I’m proud to say I know the team members involved that have been responsible for helping manage and organize this and other events and saying they worked hard is an understatement.  On the Make it Right website you can see the homes designed for the new residents and if your so inclined, you may donate to the event by purchasing things like low-V.O.C paint, landscaping, or an entire home (150K). If you notice, all the homes are 8′ off the ground to prevent future flooding.

Addie’s Mirror Stage

IMG_4108

After taking this picture, it reminded me of an image I saw in a theory class in college; Jacques Lacan’s Mirror Stage.  According to Lacan:

the mirror stage is a phenomenon to which I assign a twofold value. In the first place, it has historical value as it marks a decisive turning-point in the mental development of the child. In the second place, it typifies an essential libidinal relationship with the body image.

At the stage when Addie recognizes her body image in the mirror, she starts the formation of her Ego via the process of self-identification.   Addie is at odds with the image because it only depicts (to her) a fragmented body.  Identifying with what her parents look like, she compensates for the confusion of this disembodied image by identifying with it; vis-a-vis the Ego is formed.  Furthermore, according to Lacan, Addie’s mirror stage is a false recognition that will carry with her through life.  Therefore, when we hold Addie to a mirror we say “That’s not you.”
